Sauls Families in the Colleton County, South Carolina, Census (1860)

Most of the information listed in the 1860 census is the same as what was in the 1850 census.  However, we also get the sex of the family members and the value of the personal estate as separate from the value of the real estate.

We now have 6 Sauls families living in St. Bartholomew's Parish, Colleton County, South Carolina.  Only Mary Sauls (listed below) lives elsewhere in the county.  All of the Sauls family members listed below were born in South Carolina.

A number of these names are familiar from the 1850 census.  I think when I am done enumerating the Colleton County Saulses, I may backtrack and analyze these findings.

Only Mary Sauls is found in St. George's Parish, Colleton County.  She is living with a family with another of my surnames...
  • Mary Sauls, age 30, female  (dwelling 101, family 91)
      • In the household of F.R.M. Sineath
      • Cannot read or write
In the 1860 Census Slave Schedule, three people named Sauls are listed as owning slaves in Colleton County.
  • Isaac Sauls (in St. Paul's Parish)
    • ages 3-27
    • 1 adult, 3 children
    • 0 males, 4 females
    • 2 black, 2 mulatto
    • 1 slave house
    • 1 slave was manumitted
      • 27-year-old black female
  • Benjamin Sauls (in St. Paul's Parish)
    • ages 14-60
    • 2 adults, 2 children
    • 1 males, 3 females
    • 4 black, 0 mulatto
    • no slave house listed
    • 1 slave listed as deaf & dumb, blind, insane, or idiotic
      • 22-year-old black male
  • Caleb Sauls (in St. Bartholomew's Parish)
    • ages 13-14
    • 0 adults, 2 children
    • 0 males, 2 females
    • 2 black, 0 mulatto
    • 1 slave house
    • It looks like the 13-year-old black female was manumitted, but it is unclear
I'm not sure why the slaves are sometimes listed as being in a different parish than their owners.  I'm also not sure who this Benjamin Sauls is, although it is likely to be the same Benjamin Sauls who lived in Colleton County in 1850.  Where did he go, I wonder?
